How to Grow Giant Sunflowers

I became intrigued with Giant Sunflowers in early 2020 during the pandemic. Remember when we had more time, and everything seemed to slow down enough for us to "smell the ro—oh, I mean Sunflowers!" I often get so caught up in the gardening business that I forget that sentiment. One day, I saw a picture online of a DIY sunflower room where you could walk among them and hide once they grew!

Fast forward to 2023: I had the idea to pass out seeds instead of candy during the local parade in Struthers, Ohio. When I threw the first packet, I saw the excitement on a little boy's face as he exclaimed, "Oh! It's SUNFLOWERS!" At that moment, I knew I wanted to continue sharing plantable seeds with everyone in my community!

Now, in 2025, I am excited to offer FREE packets of sunflowers to locals! I want everyone to experience the joy of growing sunflowers, just like me and that little boy did! I’ll still distribute seed packets at the parade this Fourth of July, but I also want to make them available early to anyone interested. I've included a simple graphic with instructions for anyone who gets their hands on a packet of our seeds.

What kind of sunflowers do we have? Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflowers! These giants can reach up to 12 feet tall! They are edible so you can harvest the seeds. They grow easily in most soil types and are both drought and heat-tolerant. They thrive in full sun.

Planting Instructions:

After the last chance of frost, plant your seeds 12-18 inches apart in a shallow trench about 1/2 inch deep. Cover them over with lightly patted soil. Water them deeply and then forget about them for about 90 days.
